The Political Calculus of Saudi arabia and the Shah

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi envisioned as the preeminent power in the Persian Gulf. His ambition was fueled by rapidly growing oil revenues, close military ties with the United States, and a strong sense of Persian nationalism. This vision inevitably put at odds with Saudi Arabia, which sought to maintain leadership within the Arab and Islamic worlds. The Shah viewed as a guardian of Gulf security and sought to extend influence over smaller Gulf states.
