Technology and social media have also changed how wealth is expressed. While previous generations in Ottawa may have leaned into discretion, younger people navigate a more globalized culture. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok introduce comparisons with peers in cities like Toronto, New York, or London, where luxury is more openly displayed. As a result, some Ottawa teens adopt a hybrid identity—still grounded in local modesty, but increasingly influenced by global trends in fashion, travel, and lifestyle branding.
