The kamancheh (sometimes spelled kamancha) is his main instrument—a bowed, spike-fiddle traditional to Iran and other parts of the Middle East. He also plays setar among other traditional instruments. Kalhor’s style marries Persian classical structures (radif) with folk melodies, especially Kurdish modes, and draws in influences from regional traditions. Improvisation plays a central role in his performances, and his solos often have spontaneous, evolving quality.
He has composed and performed with legendary vocalists like Mohammad Reza Shajarian and Shahram Nazeri. Some of his well-known projects include Ghazal ensemble (Indo-Persian improvisational works), collaboration with Turkish masters like Erdal Erzincan, and work with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. His albums include Faryad, Without You, The Wind, etc. He has been nominated multiple times for Grammy Awards. As part of the Silk Road Ensemble, he won a Grammy for Sing Me Home.
