His unique dribbling style, humility, and courage both on and off the pitch have cemented his place as a true legend of Asian football. Ali Karimi was born on 8 November 1978, in Karaj, and grew up in a middle-class family passionate about football. From a young age, Karimi displayed a natural flair for dribbling and ball control that set him apart from his peers. His street football background in the suburbs of Karaj played a key role in developing his improvisational style — quick feet, balance, and an instinct for outsmarting defenders.
At Persepolis, Karimi became a fan favorite almost instantly. His fearless runs, unexpected feints, and technical mastery made him one of the most entertaining players in the Iranian Pro League. He helped Persepolis secure back-to-back league titles in 1998–99 and 1999–2000, contributing key goals and assists. Fans nicknamed him “The Wizard of Tehran” and “Asian Maradona” for his breathtaking solo plays that often decided matches single-handedly.
