Nikol Pashinyan

Pashinyan began working as a journalist in the early 1990s. In 1999, he became editor-in-chief of the newspaper Haykakan Zhamanak (“Armenian Times”), which gained popularity for exposing corruption, abuse of power, and political scandals. His outspoken reporting often put him at odds with government officials, leading to legal challenges and political pressure. Journalism helped establish his reputation as a fearless critic of Armenia’s political establishment.

Pashinyan entered politics in the mid-2000s, joining opposition movements that demanded democratic reforms and greater government accountability. He became one of the leading figures during the protests following Armenia’s disputed 2008 presidential election. After the demonstrations, he went into hiding before surrendering to authorities in 2009. He was convicted on charges related to the unrest and spent nearly two years in prison before receiving amnesty in 2011.
