County commissioners enforce local laws, codes and ordinances. They oversee the sheriff’s department and allocate money within the budget for maintaining infrastructure and unincorporated areas. Some areas have both a council and a commission, while others incorporate the responsibilities of both roles into one position. A governor is the highest-ranking official of a state’s government. Governors collaborate with state legislators to distribute funds and enact changes to the law. They have the power to appoint judges and other government positions and veto legislation.
