Habits that never leave former prisoners

In the harsh, often violent, world of prison, inmates learn to suppress emotions to survive. Many former prisoners continue to maintain a sense of emotional distance even after being released. They may appear closed off, reluctant to share personal feelings or experiences. This habit can be protective, helping them to avoid vulnerability, but it can also hinder the development of healthy relationships in their new lives.

In prison, resources are limited, and creativity is essential. Former prisoners often carry that sense of resourcefulness into freedom — finding new uses for everyday items, saving and repurposing objects, or keeping belongings meticulously organized. Many also develop minimalist habits, owning only what they truly need because clutter can feel overwhelming or wasteful.
