This claim has contributed to continuing debates among historians and journalists over how much influence Jafari actually had during the decisive hours of August 19. The distinction between Jafari’s own recollections and later historical portrayals is important. Memory is not necessarily identical to historical documentation, particularly when the person remembering the events was himself a politically controversial figure.
Jafari had a strong incentive to present his actions as expressions of personal loyalty rather than as the result of financial or organizational coordination. One of the most persistent questions surrounding Jafari is whether he received money from foreign intelligence agencies or the royal court. Jafari denied such allegations. In his later interviews, he maintained that his support for the Shah was genuine and ideological rather than financially motivated. He presented himself as someone who believed strongly in the monarchy and regarded the Shah as the legitimate ruler.
