The slightly surreal one-man show that is Mr. Alvarez’s existence in the shop was in progress, and as has become muscle instinct, Mr. Ghavamian was already filming with his camera. Mr. Ghavamian’s coming documentary, “The Candy Store,” explores Mr. Alvarez’s reputation as an unlikely Zen character displaced from New York’s urbanity. Filmed in black-and-white, the documentary has an art-house feel and Mr. Ghavamian hopes to release it early next year. (He launched a Kickstarter last month to help with postproduction costs, and the campaign was successful.) “Ray is a monk,” Mr. Ghavamian said. “And the candy store is his monastery. He is a romantic hero.”
