The tale of an unlikely bond is at the heart of the documentary, although admittedly the men have had different paths. Mr. Ghavamian, the son of two doctors, grew up and was sent to California when he was 16 to study economics. He dropped out of college to pursue filmmaking in New York. He now lives in a Chinatown apartment filled with posters of movie directors like Jean-Luc Godard. While he was in California, he started supporting the reform movement against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and directed a politically charged film. He sought asylum after the Spring and hasn’t seen his parents since. The Trump administration’s travel ban, he added, has further complicated his predicament.
