Nevertheless, concerns about safety gradually emerged. People questioned the strength of the cages, the risk of accidents, and the possibility of objects falling from buildings. At the same time, medical understanding evolved, and cities slowly improved housing quality, sanitation, and access to public outdoor spaces. As apartments became safer and urban planning changed, the perceived need for baby cages declined.
By the middle of the twentieth century, the practice had largely vanished. Today, surviving photographs of infants calmly sitting in cages outside high-rise windows often provoke shock and disbelief. Yet these unusual structures serve as reminders of how parenting practices are shaped by the social conditions, scientific beliefs, and urban challenges of their time. What appears strange or unsettling to later generations may once have been regarded as a thoughtful and responsible solution to everyday problems.
