Bennett entered national politics in the mid-2000s and served as Chief of Staff to Benjamin Netanyahu when Netanyahu was leader of the opposition. He later became leader of the religious-nationalist party The Jewish Home and held several cabinet positions, including Minister of Economy, Minister of Education, and Minister of Defense. Following a prolonged political deadlock and several inconclusive elections, Bennett formed a coalition government in 2021 together with Yair Lapid.
Under a power-sharing agreement, Bennett became Prime Minister while Lapid served as Alternate Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. His government was notable for bringing together right-wing, centrist, left-wing, and Arab political parties. Although the coalition succeeded in passing a national budget and reducing political instability, internal disagreements eventually led to its collapse in 2022. Bennett then stepped down, and Lapid succeeded him as Prime Minister.
